Moving Day

This is my last post to this blog at this address.  My Life = Chaos Management is moving to http://alabamashooters.com/anothergunchick. Please update your bookmarks.  Over the next couple of days, I am going to be sending out notices to those I know have linked to me.  This page will stay active for a while.  Then it will disappear.  I am attempting to move the archives to the new site.

Things done on a gloomy weekend

I’m sick of the weather. I know you’re sick of hearing abou it. Yesterday was supposed to be partly sunny and a high of 65*. I barely made it out of the forties with dense cloud cover and a brisk wind. Now is 65* and pouring rain.

Despite the weather, I’m feeling a bit more recovered. I have been sleeping well though I have missed my morning workout several times this week. Yesterday DH and Cricket got the ball joints put in my truck. Now I have to find a shop that can align a 1 ton dually. Hopefully someone near my office can do it.

Bugaboo and I baked gluten-free brownies. It was not my usual recipe and while very edible, they are more blondies. I was wondering about them when they called for so little chocolate and no cocoa. I will make them again but in addition to the little bit of chocolate, they will have white cholocate chips and probably macadamia nuts. I will have to remember to pick macadamias. I don’t keep them around the house.

Earlier, I went through some clothes I had set aside. I got a couple of things repaired and a stack of clothes to take tomorrow to have altered. Being as short as I am, it’s hard to find clothes that fit right. I have some pants and a jacket that need hemming.

Right now, I think I’ll read some more. I’m working my way through a pdf book I found on a survival forums called “Shatter”. It is the sequel to “Deep Winter.” Or, I may take down the curtains in the kitchen. They need washing and hemming.

Tonight, we are going to have grilled chicken with marinara. I’m not sure what veggie. Broccoli would be my choice but I think we’ve had that several times this week already. I think tomorrow will be Taco Soup.

Poor

I’ve never really thought about whether we are/were poor or not. There have been times where due to decisions we consciously made we suffered some hard times. But, we’ve never gone hungry or lived without our needs fulfilled. Note I said needs. We have lived without wants fulfilled but not needs. Then today, I read the quote from the SurvivalBlog.com: “You need only do three things in this country to avoid poverty: finish high school, marry before having a child, and marry after the age of 20. Only 8 percent of the families who do this are poor; 79 percent of those who fail to do this are poor.” - William Galston

One of us in the family did not finish high school and we married each other prior to 20. I was 17. The third item, having a child before marriage, we avoided. We’d been married 7 years before having children. It’s a good thing they’re cute and lovable because they are a huge financial drain. (But I wouldn’t trade them for all the money in the world.)

The quote got me thinking. What is “poor”? I know people making two or three times our take home pay that do not live as well as we do. Technically, they live well above poverty level but they can’t make ends meet and they are unhappy. To the other end, I know people making barely more than $10K a year who are happy and want little. I’m not sure you can quantify poor by a number.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

Snow is one the only things I like about winter (wool sweaters is the other). I despise the cold and the dreary days. I like snow. However, while we might be forecast to get some, I doubt we will. We are supposed to have flurries with light accumulation from midnight tonight through about 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. But, the temp is supposed to stay above freezing. Then we get a day of sunshine (HA, that’s what we were supposed to have several days this week and we’ve had none) and then days of rain. Winter hasn’t even started and I’m tired of it.

Nice trip

We had a nice trip to visit relatives. Everyone is doing great. We got a chance to go out to our land. The family owns a few hundred acres. It was divded up years ago so each part of the family has some. We got a chance to shoot some guns. If we hadn’t needed to get home to make electrical repairs, we’d have gotten a chance to hunt. We are discussing going up later in the year for a long weekend and doing some hunting. Out there, you rough it. Despite many of the members living out there for periods of time over the last 50 years, there is no water and no power. You bring in all your water and a generator supplies limited power to one spot. My in-laws lived there for a time. My father-in-law was a deputy sheriff and came home one day to my mother-in-law at the kitchen window. She had seen a snake and kept shooting until it quit moving. The snake had many holes in it, all shot from the kitchen window in to her garden.

We’ve got a lot of work to do today. I hope your holiday weekend has been good.

Cooking

I’m off until Monday. It feels nice to have some free time but I know Monday that all the work that should have been done this week will catch up with us. I am packing and cooking. Rice Chex and Corn Chex are now gluten free so I am making Muddy Buddies. It’s a nice sweet treat that is quick and easy. Gluten free doesn’t often translate into quick and easy. I am also making Brigid’s Disappearing Dip. My version of spanish rice will be made for Thanksgiving supper. I had hoped to make some gluten free pumpkin bread but, alas, I’m not sure I’m going to have time.

Some of us are headed west this weekend for a family reunion. I am hoping to get some hunting in. I’ve been invited to go hunting with a coworker up the road from home. He saw tracks of a huge buck yesterday. That’s make a nice start to our freezer this season.

If I don’t get to post tomorrow, I hope your Thanksgiving is fun and full of love.

IDPA and rain

I know y’all are tired of hearing me fuss about rain. You’d think in such a drought-prone area, we’d never complain about rain. Unfortunately, I’m just one of those people that needs sunshine. My eyes hate it but my skin loves the glow and warmth.

Anyway, after getting 5+ inches of rain from non-Hurricane Ida plus all the rain we’ve had this summer, we are waterlogged. And now, Saturday’s forecast is more rain. Saturday is our monthly IDPA match. Now, I’ve shot a lot of matches in the rain. My first two matches were shot in the winter. It was 35*F and lightly raining all day for both of them. The first sanctioned match I SO’d, it poured rain all day. Rain gear makes all of this possible. But, at my age and with as busy as everything has been lately, I’m not sure I want to shoot in a cool rain. I think I’d rather stay snug-as-a-bug under my down comforter with my new little kitten (yes, I’ve been brought over to the dark side of kitten love by this adorable little black kitten that reminds me of a werewolf). Replace the kitten with my husband in that scenario and life would be grand. All my concern may be a moot point as in the last 24 hours they have moved the rain from Friday night to Saturday and Saturday night. It could move off further by Saturday morning.

I guess on that possibility and the fact that I’ll probably shoot rain or shine, I need to start checking for mag pouches for the 1911 .45acp I will be shooting this weekend. I have a ladies holster but not mag pouches since it is DH’s carry gun. The holster is technically to my 1911 9mm but both guns fit. However, the 9mm is a double stack and thus the single stack mags won’t work in the mag pouches for the 9mm. I’m not found of DH’s leather mag pouches for competition.

Another busy weekend

Somehow, I really must find a way to slow life down a little. Here is a list of the what we could do this weekend. Most of it we are not.

Halloween Festival at school
CMP match
10th Anniversary celebration for my sister’s science center
HAM test (am going to this)
setting up wireless network at boss’s house
Trick or Treat
shopping for clothes since Cricket and Bugaboo won’t stop growing

And that’s just Saturday. Our monthly USPSA match is Sunday. We are also still bottle feeding kittens. I’m exhausted writing it.
