Another HAM in the family
Cricket passed her Technician test last night. She was thrilled. She worked hard for it.

My Shelf-it came in and so did my new radio. I got an ICOM 208H for my truck. I’ve been using an older Icom but we are going to put it in the house. I ordered new Ram Mounts for both radios. Over the weekend, we’ll get everything set up just as I want it. (We did my shelf last night in the rain.) I’m so spoiled.

Last night, I talked with someone other than DH on the radio. It was with a gentleman DH chats with frequently. DH was already home and I was traveling home late after shopping. We chatted about family and upcoming radio Christmas parties. Then last night, I check into the SkyWarn net.
DH and I both have roof mount antennas on our main vehicles now. DH’s is taller than his car. We’ve been joking that if he goes around a corner too fast it will turn him over. Mine is the other extreme. I have a small basic antenna on my big old truck.
There is a Foxhunt tomorrow at a local fort. It is going to be done all on foot. I’d really like to go but our monthly IDPA match is tomorrow. Also, the forecast is rain. We may hole up like hermits. Anyway, the foxhunt sounds fun and they have it planned as a family affair with food and demonstrations. I hate to miss it. We couldn’t hunt as we do not have the appropriate equipment yet but I’m sure we’d meet a lot of great people and learn alot about what we need to hunt.
Why is it that the hobbies that are the most fun are so expensive? Well, guns used to be cheap to shoot but they’re not now and HAM is getting expensive. At least from what I know right now, HAM does not have to continue to be expensive after the initial outlay. It doesn’t have the consumables shooting does. Knitting is a lot like shooting. Yarn you really want to knit with is expensive and you keep needing more of it.

DH and I both have our technician licenses now. We have a radio mounted in my truck with a roof-mount antenna. We did not have time to finish DH’s car over the weekend. We also have a Tahoe and hunting truck to do. No, we are not putting separate radios in each vehicle. We are getting Ram Mounts and moving two radios between vehicles.
We’ve found a simplex channel where he and I can chat on the way back and forth from work. I enjoy listening to some of the chatter on one of the local repeaters. I discovered that is a very good Chinese restaurant I have not tried yet. I’ll have to investigate and see if it is sit-down or take-out only.
Cricket is working on the book for her technician’s license but with school work, it is slow going. Bugaboo thinks she wants to work on it too but misses listening to our regular country music station in the mornings. At her age, talk about Chinese restaurants and such aren’t too interesting. Plus, she loves music.

I have my call sign now. I can officially transmit. DH is studying for the General Class license and Cricket is studying for the Technician Class. For right now, I will stick with Technician Class. There is a HAMfest here in two weeks.

I passed the Technician class HAM exam. I missed three questions. I imagine those were the three I had to guess on. Cricket is next in line to take her test. With her school work, it may be a while but she does seem interested in passing quickly. The next test is at the HAMfest later this month. Right now I’m listening waiting for my name to show up in the database. DH already has a radio for me. We are wondering if we will be able to talk from home to Ft. Benning this weekend. He’ll probably be too busy to figure it out.
