The Survivalblog.com is a must read every day for me. Over the weekend, he linked an article, suggested by a reader about freezing to death. It is older (1997) but quite interesting. I’d be interested in knowing what advances have been made in determining why the cold affects people different ways. As Freezing Persons Recollect the Snow–First Chill–Then Stupor–Then the Letting Go
I personally don’t like the cold much. Even as a child when I spent a good bit of time outdoors, I did not like the cold. Now, with spending much of everyday in a climate controlled environment, I really don’t like the cold. With the long, cold, wet winter we’ve had this year, I am getting climatized to it. A year ago, I would have not considered being without long-johns on a day like today (cloudy and 45*F). But, none on now. I’d still rather not be outside though.

Brigid has an excellent review of a “Home on the Range” woman. Most of those describe me to a T. Do you find yourself in any other them?

Earlier this week, FoxNews ran a story about a private police force in a small town in Montana, I believe. This got me thinking. (Always a dangerous thing.) I drive past an old warehouse complex everyday going home. It’s been for lease for 20 years or so. Well, in the past six months, items have been showing up in the lot outside the warehouse. It is all well-fenced, always has been. The first of these items were small manufactured homes. They reminded my of FEMA trailers so I didn’t think much about it. A few weeks later I noticed the number of homes had double (or more) and now there were also several travel trailers there. Again, I just figured it was a staging area for FEMA of hurricane season. Then olive drab trucks started showing up. And security was always there. Then an assortment of other vehicles, including unmarked Crown Vics. Now there is so much stuff out there I can’t think of what all it is. Makes you wonder.

Gold hit a record high today. I’m wondering about the likelihood of our dollar being more worthless than TP soon. At least TP serves a soft purpose.

At 3:53 EDT, an ounce of gold was at $1017. I’m thinking I may need to stop wearing my wedding band lest I lose a finger to a metal dealer. When copper was so high last spring, people would have their house relieved of its plumbing while they were at work. I wonder when the hoodlums will notice what their neighbor’s chains will bring.
Update: It closed at $1018.0!

Robb Allen has a very good post up about the process you need to go through to evaluate your ability to own a gun for self-defense.

Well, all his devoted fans managed to push James Wesley, Rawles book to #4 on the bestseller list at Amazon yesterday. Dan Brown, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck were ranked higher. Hopefully it will stay there a while.

In our efforts to store food, I came across this link about building a shelf system for little money instead of buying one for a lot. Since saving money is my biggest reason to store food, this piqued my interest. I think this is something we will be doing soon.
Do you have food stored? Do you do your own or do you buy cans? Right now, we are buying cans, on sale — deeply on sale. But, we are learning a lot about storing what we produce. I really, really want a pressure canner and a dehydrator. We kill a lot of deer and I have gotten to the point that I don’t want to rely on my freezer. What pressure canner do you use? Dehydrator? Any interest in a trade?
