A FoxNews Business poll asks if Obama will raise taxes on those making less than $250,000 a year. He already has. On January 1, $7 more a paycheck went to taxes than on December 31. You can’t tax your way out of a financial crisis. Taxes stifles people’s ability to make ends meet whether they are individuals or business.

that after Obama started bashing people, even the overjoyed Dems seemed subdued. Did you also notice that Biden and Pelosi matched. Both were wearing a spring-like lavender — Pelosi’s suit and Biden’s tie. Both were also blinking constantly. It was quite distracting. It might have been less so had the speech had more content and less BS. It was hard not to be distracted since the President was just repeating himself.

Did the State of the Union address remind anyone else of a pep rally from another world? I’m not sure I’m living in the same world as the President. His words don’t match my reality.

The press is happy that the unemployment rate fell to 10%. However, if you look deeper, many of the jobs that were added to the rolls are temporary workers. Many sectors still lost as many or more jobs than they did in September and October. Even the retail sector which typically is hiring seasonal workers in November say job losses. Folks, it’s not the happy picture mainstream media wants to paint.

In the back of my mind, there’s been a little nagging pinch for some time. It pushes forward occasionally to make me sit and ponder the realities of today. The media and politicians keep telling us we’ve seen the worse, that we are recovering from the worse recession since the Great Depression. But, the realities I see don’t match their words. Things are not bad here. I know a few folks that can’t find the work they’d like to have. (I won’t say they can’t find work because most fast food restaurants are still hiring though I have noticed McDonald’s no longer has signs out.) New housing starts are down here but you still see sold signs on existing houses. But, I have also seen an increase in folks walking the highways with backpacks and scrawny dogs. Many times, it seems to be couples looking for rides at freeway entrances. Prices on food and other goods we “need” has gone up. Lately food prices have gone up considerably. Most people complain about it, pay for the increase with a credit card and go about their day, sticking their head in the sand.
I don’t feel like we’ve hit bottom. Apparently, a few others feel the same way. Neanderpundit weighs in on the issue as does Brigid. My feelings on the issue are much greater than expressed here but I can’t put them to words. I’ve been working on it for months.

Knowledge of how our economy works is not my strong suit. However, from the little research I’ve done, typically is the Dow is up, gold is down and vice versa. Well, today, the Dow closed at a 14-month high and gold is near $1200 an ounce (it was over that mark at at least one point today.) Strong Dow, strong gold. Does something not seem amiss here?
Meanwhile, at the store, you can see the drop in the value of your dollar. Food prices are up. Christmas ornaments are up. We have a ornament swap party every year. The spending limit is $5. I could not find anything decent for $5. Even the cheap plastic stuff was marked $5.99 and $6.99 at some stores. I still have a week until the party. By then, with the dollar marching south, my food bill will preclude me from buying Christmas ornaments.

Earlier this week, FoxNews ran a story about a private police force in a small town in Montana, I believe. This got me thinking. (Always a dangerous thing.) I drive past an old warehouse complex everyday going home. It’s been for lease for 20 years or so. Well, in the past six months, items have been showing up in the lot outside the warehouse. It is all well-fenced, always has been. The first of these items were small manufactured homes. They reminded my of FEMA trailers so I didn’t think much about it. A few weeks later I noticed the number of homes had double (or more) and now there were also several travel trailers there. Again, I just figured it was a staging area for FEMA of hurricane season. Then olive drab trucks started showing up. And security was always there. Then an assortment of other vehicles, including unmarked Crown Vics. Now there is so much stuff out there I can’t think of what all it is. Makes you wonder.

Gold hit a record high today. I’m wondering about the likelihood of our dollar being more worthless than TP soon. At least TP serves a soft purpose.

At 3:53 EDT, an ounce of gold was at $1017. I’m thinking I may need to stop wearing my wedding band lest I lose a finger to a metal dealer. When copper was so high last spring, people would have their house relieved of its plumbing while they were at work. I wonder when the hoodlums will notice what their neighbor’s chains will bring.
Update: It closed at $1018.0!

I know posting has been light. Work is just crazy. Homecoming is tonight. Gotta love small Southern town football. It’s been a party the whole week. Plus, I am trying to study for a HAM radio license. DH passed his last week. Unfortunately, my knowledge of electricity is “Don’t touch, it bites.” It’s been slow going.
Anyway, reuters.com has two stories about the possibility of inflation in the near future (not very near). I can’t find a mention of these two articles anywhere. There is one brief line on bloomberg.com in an interview with Alan Greenspan. One of the articles on Reuters was about Greenspan’s comments. Basically the two articles say that if the Fed fails to move at the right time, inflation is inevitable. We all knew that but I finally thought Mainstream America might learn something. Then upon looking around, I found that Reuters is standing alone on this one. I was discouraged. I am not sure why since I know the MS media sucks.
I am encouraged to read this article — Five year-old boy shoots gator. It warms the heart to see a positive article about children and guns. I was wondering if you stuff him or eat him. Gator’s good!
