Have you thanked one today? Better yet, take one to lunch, or perhaps supper. I think I’ll call my Dad.
To all our great Veterans, Thanks a bunch. I know my little corner of the world would be a much different place without you.

It comes via Robb Allen. It is so scary to me that most of America is sitting by not giving a damn that we are up the creek without a paddle.

Earlier this week, FoxNews ran a story about a private police force in a small town in Montana, I believe. This got me thinking. (Always a dangerous thing.) I drive past an old warehouse complex everyday going home. It’s been for lease for 20 years or so. Well, in the past six months, items have been showing up in the lot outside the warehouse. It is all well-fenced, always has been. The first of these items were small manufactured homes. They reminded my of FEMA trailers so I didn’t think much about it. A few weeks later I noticed the number of homes had double (or more) and now there were also several travel trailers there. Again, I just figured it was a staging area for FEMA of hurricane season. Then olive drab trucks started showing up. And security was always there. Then an assortment of other vehicles, including unmarked Crown Vics. Now there is so much stuff out there I can’t think of what all it is. Makes you wonder.

Robb Allen has a very good post up about the process you need to go through to evaluate your ability to own a gun for self-defense.

What do those words mean to you? Blindly, for years, I felt the “powers that be” (governmental agencies) provided us with information and warnings for our own good. I spend countless hours huddled in hallways at school practicing tornado drills. We listened to the sirens and the information released on weather incidences. We had protocols to follow for illnesses, etc.
However, as I have gotten older, I have realized that while the government may have had the best of intentions when implementing many of these “rules”, it appears more and more like ways to control us. They start now with us as infants with rules about what can be given to us. Then as we age and get into school, there are rules and regulations for everything. Those “tornado drills” teach us to walk in straight, quiet lines to huddle on the floor and fear for our lives.
Now, they are discussing a bill that would allow the President to declare a “cyber state of emergency” and shut down the internet. This reeks of censorship. What would constitute a “cyber state of emergency”? The bill is too vague for anyone to say for sure. That says to me that anything found to be “a threat to national security” would be shut down. Who defines that threat? I know under the current adminstration many of my ideas and wants for my governing body are probably a threat to their definition of national security. I don’t agree with them. I am watching the nation I love slowly be destroyed and often feel helpless to stop it. I think in the back of my mind, I am preparing more to rebuild than to restore.

I have edited this post numerous times. I can’t quite seem to say what I mean. It sounds good in my head but doesn’t impart my meaning on paper. My contemplations for this post began this morning. I was listening to FoxNews as I readyied myself for my day. On there was a congresscritter from up north. His feelings on the healthcare debate were that everyone should be on a government plan. The public option should be the only option.
The government is too big. We (collectively as Americans) need to learn to stop looking for the government’s help. We need to take care of ourselves and our own. We choose how that should be done. Each step government takes into our lives limits our choice. Without choice we are subjects, not citizens.
If you haven’t done so lately, remind your congresscritter how you feel. U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. Then look to see what you can do to make this country look like you want it to look. I am doing the same. There are many programs that need eliminating. How do I work towards that end? What end are you working towards?

I read the Survival Blog every day. It is a wealth of information. Over the weekend, an article was posted on the implications of shoot or don’t shoot here. It is a must read with a lot of good information.
One thing mentioned that I don’t often see is to know the feelings of your local law enforcement officials. I am lucky where I reside. It’s rural, nearly everybody hunts and those that don’t have a gun somewhere. Sheriff is cool with it all. However, I commute to a different county. The county sheriff is very anti-public-having-guns. He thinks it should be left up to the police. Right now, I am not sure about the city police. The last mayor got himself elected to congress. He encouraged the citizenry to be armed and take care of themselves. I’m not sure about the current mayor. It’s a hard call but I’m betting he’s not that friendly about guns. It is something I need to investigate.
It’s interesting that prior to reading the article, I was at a local bank that gets robbed somewhat more than most others in the city. It’s in a ripe location (although the one across the street got robbed much more prior to closing). I stood in line (one downfall of the dually is I can’t do drive-throughs) thinking about what my reaction would be to an armed robbery of the bank. When would I intervene? Would I at all? I know my boundaries and was reviewing them. They stretch and tighten depending on the circumstance.
Go read the article and determine your boundaries.
